2008 Enclave hard to start cold

Hello all, Anyone had this problem? The car is hard to start when cold. Black smoke comes out of the exhaust and smells like gas. There is no Check Engine light or trouble codes. The car has 109000 miles on it. It is going to the dealer next week for the wave plate problem. I would like to know what part could be defective so that I could ask them to replace it, without the extensive diagnostics they do at 100.00$/Hour.

what happens when you go to the gas station and fill up?

is it a hard start there too?

as in several cranks until it starts?

The engine seems to want to start, stutters and finally catches. When it starts, black smoke from the tail pipes. I pulled the plugs at 150000 kms and put in 6 ac Delco plugs. ( pulled the originals.) Sometimes it takes two attempts to start. I never had problems after fill ups. Always starts a1.

ok, I was asking a
as hard start after fills ups is due to the purge valve up front by engine.

guess this is not your case.

I am thinking maybe a sticking valve, or partially held open by deposits. Ever do a carbon cleaning?

Re: 2008 Enclave hard to start cold

I had hard starting problem on my 2008 a while back. As Rbarrios said - could be the purge valve. They are easy to remove as easily accessible in the front of the engine. Unplug the electrical connector and the rubber hoses, pull the valve assy. off the rubber mount if I remember correctly. If you can blow through the valve - it's bad and needs replacement (about $20). If valve OK - then you might have to look into something more difficult and expensive. Just a thought.

How cold are you talking about? Maybe you have ice build up on your throttle body. You can do a good cleaning on that and make sure it is free and clean. If you have any moisture in there ice can build up.

Thank you everyone for the answers. I'll change the purge valve after the transmission is fixed. Lost my reverse gear today. The wave plate syndrome has hit!! Lolll
