Can I hook up a 500GB hard drive with music?

Like the title says, I want to know if I could hook up a 500GB portable drive via the USB drive in my Enclave and control it via the factory stereo. This works with my iPod, but I don't know if what types of devices are supported.

I don't know how much power output you will get from the USB port, so you might have to plug it into to an AC port or maybe a DC port to USB adapter, but here are the specs on what it supports.

http://www.buick.com/owners/vehicle-manuals.html

From the owners manual.

USB Supported File and Folder
Structure
The radio supports:
.
Up to 700 folders.
.
Up to 8 folders in depth.
.
Up to 65,535 files.
.
Folder and file names up to
64 bytes.
.
Files with an .mp3 or .wma file
extension.
.
AAC files stored on an iPod.
.
FAT16
.
FAT32

File System and Naming
The song name that displays is the
song name that is contained in the
ID3 tag. If the song name is not
present in the ID3 tag, then the
radio displays the file name without
the extension (such as .mp3) as the
track name.
Track names longer than
32 characters or four pages are
shortened. Parts of words on the
last page of text and the extension
of the filename does not display.
Preprogrammed Playlists
Preprogrammed playlists that
were created using WinAmp™,
MusicMatch™, or Real Jukebox™
software can be accessed, however,
they cannot be edited using the
radio. These playlists are treated
as special folders containing
compressed audio song files.
Playlists that have an .m3u or .pls
file extension and are stored on a
USB device may be supported by
the radio with a USB port.

Thanks for the info. I guess there is one way to find out. I will post my findings after I purchase the hard drive and load it with mp3s. I plan on doing this anyway, regardless of whether it will work in the Enclave or not.

I wonder if 700 folders means the total, or if it can be 700 main folders and each of them can be up to 8 folders deep.

I will be very interested in hearing if this works and how it works. I've downloaded all my music to an external hard drive and would love to listen to it in the car.

Re: Can I hook up a 500GB hard drive with music?

hmmm.... close but no cigar;-)

I was able to convert my portable hard drive from NTFS to FAT32.

Now I am getting a message stating "no audio files were found". I have mp3s on the top layer of the drive, some 1 folder deep and some 2 folders deep. I am wondering if they all have to be on the "top level". I will experiment some more and report my findings.
