A/C Smell DURING Operation. . .

Hey, I'm looking for all my electronic exploded diagrams of the Enclave so I can locate the evaporator case for the a/c coil, hood, transfer ducts, drain tube, etc.

But, in the meantime, would any of you know the general area so I can take a peek at it?

My query:

1) Is it difficult to get at?

2) Has anyone tried to blow/suck out the drain tube with air/water to remove any blockages?

3) Has anyone introduced a chemical into the evaporator case to kill off growth/bacteria (the actual cause of the odors being produced)? If yes, what did you use? I'd prefer to NOT use Sodium Hypochlorite (bleach)

The issue I've noticed for the past three weeks, after not driving the car regularly, is that when I use the A/C, it smells like a cow pasture. It appears that I'm still getting drainage from the drain tube, but it's as though I've just passed a farm that's laid a fresh coat of nature's finest fertilizer on their fields when I hit that switch for the A/C. An air freshener would treat the symptom, and not the cause. But, I really don't want to use bleach simply because I detest its odor, and there's too much at stake with the tiniest little slip of the hand when using it. OxyClean would foam up and lift away a lot of it, but I need to be able to see, and reach the area, too. Being able to brush it and wipe it out with old rags or paper towels would be the perfect ending for a nice, complete cleaning. But, I need to get my hands on those **** diagrams, first.

After, I plan to use a Yankee Candle Home Fragrance Oil on a fairly easily accessible, absorbant, replaceable pad within the main air transfer duct system. Perhaps Christmas Cookie, Mandarin Cranberry, Pumpkin Pie, or Apple Cider. The 'funny' thing about this, is that my Enclave just lost it's 'new car smell' around March-April this year. That's pretty darn good for a four year old car.

I've never done it, but I hear Lysol sprayed into the cowl inlet works. You're supposed to do it when the compressor is running.

Although Lysol is also off my list due to the smell, you gave me the entry point and an idea for another product. Thank You.

I ended up trying the 'Lemon Fresh' scented liquid that's left over in the bottom of a 75 piece Clorox Disinfecting Wipes container. It's Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride and Ethylbenzyl Ammonium Chloride, so it's good stuff to at least try out. It's a contact cleaner, so it needs to touch something to work.

We'll see when I start the car later today after sitting in the warm garage.

Thanks for the idea, BadAV.

GM makes a product specifically for this. I bought it at the dealer but I haven't used yet. I am not home right now but when I get back on Fri I will post the name and PN. I found it from an SB instructing techs to use this stuff for customer complaints.

Awesome!!!

Excellent.

and, Thank You.

Looking forward to your info JerseyDevil.

Complete eradication and extirpation is my goal with this infiltration. So, if GM has something for it, and you have it, I'm all ears as to what it is, and the compound(s) being utilized consist of which chemicals?

What is the result of spraying the output side (interior side) of the cabin filter. Would this also work?

Re: A/C Smell DURING Operation. . .

I noticed an odor in our car last summer when running the AC. I ordered and installed this http://www.wizzvent.com/ and the odor went away and has not returned. I installed it low on a wall right next to the engine compartment of the care when it is parked. Even with tons of snow melting in my garage this winter the car stayed odor free. It's a pretty cheap way to control the moisture levels in your garage but really effective.

No cabin filter in an Enclave.

In fact, some of us even have different access panels (where a cabin filter SHOULD reside) to that portion of the blower unit. Some of us can get to them, some of us cannot. I cannot.

Thanks, but I have a VERY inexpensive dry, sacrificial, hygroscopic chemical system I use that works fine.

Actually, I think I know what the problem is. About three weeks ago I went to the town dump and drove through the muck and mire out back in the area where you can dump your grass clippings, and other organics, such as HORSE MANURE. This has the be it. I remember spinning the tires in the $hit while trying to get out of there. And THAT's what it smells like. . .HORSE $hit, not cow $hit. Yes, there's a VERY big difference. I'll get the car washed along with the undercarriage, plus use the item recommended by JerseyDevil on Friday. The liquids must have contaminated the A/C drain tube (which was running at the time), and worked it's way back up the hose into the condensate drain pan/case, and spread itself around in there.

There clorox wipes juice didn't help, although it irritated my nose, throat, and sinus cavity, even with an N95 particulate respirator with quick exhalation valve. So the micron level of the mist produced must have been too small to be captured in the mask. Plus, it wasn't effective.

Re: A/C Smell DURING Operation. . .

I posted this on the Traverse board under a very similar topic about A/C odors.

http://www.traverseforum.com/index.php?topic=2606.0

Here is the GM procedure to eliminate the odors sometimes found in the HVAC system. Copied from the service manual for my 2010 Traverse. They mention a Deodorizing Aerosol Kit which must be a GM carried part. Here is a link to a parts store which sells the product but has a decent description of how it works.

http://paceperformance.com/i-6484824...z-aerosol.html

Odor Correction

Eliminating Air Conditioning Odor

Odors may be emitted from the air conditioning system primarily at start up in hot, humid climates. The following conditions may cause the odor:

Debris is present in the HVAC module.
Microbial growth on the evaporator core

When the blower motor fan is turned on, the microbial growth may release an unpleasant musty odor into the passenger compartment. To remove odors of this type, the microbial growth must be eliminated. Perform the following procedure:

Deodorize the evaporator core using Deodorizing Aerosol Kit

Perform the following steps in order to deodorize the A/C system:

Ensure that the plenum that draws outside air into the HVAC module is clear of debris.
Disable the A/C compressor clutch operation by disconnecting the clutch coil electrical connector.
Dry the evaporator core by performing the following steps:

Start the engine.
Select the maximum temperature setting.
Select the recirculation mode.
Run the blower motor on high for 10 minutes.

Locate an area in the air conditioning duct between the blower motor and the evaporator core downstream of the blower motor.
Drill a 3.175 mm (0.125 in) hole where the hole will not interfere with or damage the following components:

The blower motor
The evaporator core
Any other operating part the of system

Wear safety goggles and latex gloves in order to perform the following actions:

Select the maximum blower speed.
Insert the deodorizer extension tube into the hole to the mark on the extension tube.
Use short spray bursts and vary the direction of spray for a 2-3 minute period of time.

Shut the engine OFF. Allow the vehicle to sit for 3-5 minutes.
Seal the 3.175 mm (0.125 in) hole with body sealer or RTV gasket compound.
Start the engine.
Operate the blower motor on high for 15-20 minutes to dry.
Reconnect the A/C compressor clutch coil electrical connector.
Verify proper clutch operation.
