This has been discussed in the past, but I do not recall if there was a final diagnosis of the cause. I am inclined to think that the rear liftgate switch was to blame. Since your car is still under warranty, I would get it to the dealer before it happens again and may cause some damage to the car, other property, or lead to theft of unguarded items from your car.

I would agree with the diagnosis that the touch pad has dirt or water that has contaminated the switch, which would cause the hatch to open.

Until the dealer can diagnose, I would shut-off the tailgate with the dash switch so that you don't have unattended hatch opening events.

I would tend to believe that if the vehicle sits outside, and/or is driven in wet weather a lot, that could possibly be the problem....water in the switch.  Or....if you get the vehicle washed a lot.  Or if there's a lot of temperature difference where you park that could form condensation on the swtch.  These are all my ideas, nothing's proven.

It was Ponchonutty on the Outlook forum- he actually saw the hatch open out the corner of his eye.
He posted this

"I decided to tear into this issue since I bought a new switch (less than $20).  From start to finish it took about 30 minutes to do.

Here's a picture of the old and new switch.  If you look close you can see some corrosion on the back of the old switch"

Here's a picture of the old switch with out the rubber cover.  You can clearly see that moisture and probably salt has entered inside and messed up the contacts.

RBARRIOS,,    The touch pad in question  is the outside one, the one in the grab handle above the lic. plate.  Correct?? Not the one used to close the hatch..

That looks like the inside lift gate switch.
Thanks for the heads up, will have to keep on eye out for this in the future, since I live Windy City.

this should be the switch that you use your fingers on from the outside.
he mentioned it had a small tear/hole-- that allowed water intrusion.

I always wondered (still do) how that outside switch works.  You don't feel a button actually move in and out..how does it actually work?  Heat?

contact switch or sorts.

if you look at the pic- the middle portion appears raised... like a curved bridge.
it starts at one end- and zig zags in a square wave-- to the other end- this is one part of the circuit.

the other part is the surface below it...
when you go to open the tailgate- you touch any part of that raised part-- and press it- bending the raised part-- and contacts the white looking surface--- completing the circuit....

Have an appoinment tomorrow morning for the hatch opening on it's own.  When I made the appointment it did not sound encouraging, dealer said they never heard of the problem??  It did the same thing two days ago, setting in the car motor shut off but had the keys in the ignition.  I opened the drivers door for a second and low and behold up went the rear hatch..  Not sure if a ghost exited at that time or not, if so hope he does not come back???Will let all know how I make out at the dealer.
