When I took my Enclave in to the local Jiffy Lube for an oil change, I asked that they check the air filter and replace it (I had over 12,000 miles on the vehicle with the original air cleaner).  The technician said that they did not stock the air filter and recommended going to a local auto parts store instead of the dealership (cost reasons mostly).  I found that the local Advance Auto Parts had the correct part (the attendant had a 2008 Enclave).  I purchased the air filter and went home to put it on.

Much to my surprise the bolt holding the air cleaner in place is not compatible with any metric or SAE Phillips head screwdriver or Allen Wrench that I own.  I have about 8 different head sized Phillips head screwdrivers and a 22 piece combination SAE/Metric Allen Wrench set.

I really do not want to have to take this into the dealership to do a 5 minute job (and maybe having to wait 30 minutes or more in the process).  Does anyone know the correct size to remove the bolt cover? Bang Head

I thought the '11's had to use a special engine oil...something like "Dek 5"? Aside from this important item, you let a place like a "quick change" work on a $40,000 plus car? Check their work histories!!

It's called a torx-head screw. You can buy the tools to remove them at any hardware store. I've got a Craftsman set that's like a screwdriver. They also sell sets that work with a 1/4" ratchet. I don't remember for sure what size it was but I'm guessing it's either a T10 or T15. There are a couple of the screws that were a little difficult to get to with the screwdriver-type tool.

You shouldn't be worried about the air filter being dirty yet unless you drive only on gravel roads; I replaced mine late last fall at 30k miles and it was still pretty clean. I had already bought the filter; if I hadn't, I wouldn't have bothered changing it out yet.

First off, those air filters are supposed to go 50K miles, according to the owner's manual.  Second, my quick oil change place just on Friday tried to sell me one, at 16K miles, and I showed them the owner's manual that it says 50K miles....oh well, but they had the box off and showed me the filter, so they were able to get it open no problems.  They must stock the filters, because they told me the price would be $22 if I were to replace it.  Why so early?  Their computer told them to replace between 12K and 14K, not even close to what's recommended.  shrug

yup, 50K on the my 2010 Traverse, and my 07 Impala.
Now at 43K on the impala- and air filter is amazingly not as dirty as I would think it would be.
By the way- Ive read in several places--- that a slightly dirty air filter is better at MPG-- than a brand new one....
What I read actually made sense.
Slightly dirty--- doesnt mean-- all clogged up dirty- for the above definition.

 :'(I thought I would find a heated discussion on this issue.
I bounced my happy out to eyeball air filter over the holidays, 2010 E had just turned 12000.
What a JOKE. I've never seen such a mess.
Unless you have the patience of Job................
I had to go back out to shop and rummage thru everything to round up all the possible tools I suspected would need.........
That rear pass side screw had to use a ratchet set up/ also remove filler cap on I guess the brake fluid filler for additional access, once all screws removed/ wrestle/pry the flex hose
off, then twist/turn/pull to lift cap to finally see the snow white filter. Looked like there were several hoses fastened to back/side of cap housing. I quit at that point and buttoned back up. That little task will have to wait till 48000 before I save up /bank enough expletives for the next go round!!

make sure you didnt pinch the windshield washe hose that runs really close to the air filter..
there is a note to techs to watch out of pinched hoses in this area....
you dont want unfiltered air  getting in.

I will say this is the first time I have ever heard of paper air filters that may last longer than timing chains!   Cheesy

I don't understand how they can state that the filters don't need changing until 50000 miles.  These are after all just a paper filter element with no type of pre-filtering.  Just a few years ago the elements were supposed to be checked/replaced every 12000 miles.  I wonder what has really changed that now they can go 50000 miles.

The owner's manual does say to check the filter at every oil change if the car is driven in dirty/dusty conditions.  Heck, that statement tells me to check at every oil change because who is to say what is dirty/dusty conditions?  My car can't go 1000 miles without getting dirty and needing a wash, why would my filter be immune from any of that dirt or dust?

It may be a pain, but I'll be checking mine every 5000 miles when I do an oil change and rotate the tires.

I know what you mean.
On my Trailblazer- I would change every year. And it was dirty.
On the Impala- the filter is clean after 40K miles.
Dont know why?

possible... but Ive had 2 Used oil analysis on this engine- and Silicon was high on the 1st because of engine break in (18)
the subsequent UOA at 38K- silicon dropped to (4)

but-- on a UOA I did on my trailblazer-- showed higher silicon.... I went to look- and when I put a little weight on it-- it snapped into place..
it was allowing some dirty air in.
