I'd be willing to be the GM book way of doing it involves removing a lot more than is actually necessary. The official procedures often tear things down a lot farther to avoid having to remove any bolts blindly or doing awkward reaches/stretches/combinations of socket elbows/extensions even though it can shave a lot of time off the job.

The worst example I can think of is the GM procedure for a headlight bulb replacement involving removing half the front bumper while anyone not just trying to run up billable hours just turns the steering wheel all the way one way, pulls back the wheel well liner and swaps the bulb through the wheel well in about 5-10 minutes.

I understand the train of your thinking but this was a warranty job. Does the dealer get to bill GM for the expensive way of repairing it? :)
