rattle when going over bumps....

30729 Views 20 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  mikepatterson31
The last couple months I've noticed a knocking or rattling sound when going over bumps, even small ones. It sounds like it's coming from the engine compartment and possibly on the passenger side.

I looked under the hood and didn't feel any loose parts.

Is there a common cause for this that anyone can point out to me? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sounds like a shock going bad or possibly a strut.

Sounds like a character from a Dick Tracy comic book!!!
Do a search on the various forums for sway bar, end links, and stabilizer links, and you will find many posts about how to find the problem and how to repair it yourself if you are so inclined. As mentioned also, the shock/strut could be involved, so you might want to check that out also. Sounds like something in the front suspension.
Check the refridgerant and coolant lines that go to the rear of the vehicle. They are on the passenger side just behind the right front tire. If they have become unlatched from the retention bracket they could be banging on the exhaust system.
Had the problem a year or so ago and it was the endlink; left-front if I recall. That's worth checking out, however there are lots of other possibilities.

Mine is doing the same thing. It's a subtle noise and I'm thinking it's related to the extreme cold temperatures we've been experiencing. It almost sounds like something that is normally padded is now rattling because the pads are stiff...

That could be caused by failing bushings.
It could also be the heat shields. Check to make sure the bolts are tight. You also may have to bend them away from whatever they are shielding (sometimes they get too close and will rattle against whatever they are shielding). I had an annoying noise like that and the dealer check the shields -- noise gone!! :blob:

both could be exacerbated by unusually low temps. the former if it's a "tinny" rattle; the latter if it's a "clunking".
Definitely a knocking sound with no metallic character to it at all. Thanks for the suggestions!

That's the way mine was... a bad end link. Probably any bad bushing in the front end would have a similar "clunk.

cngizbleevng,
I am sorry to hear that you are having this issue with your Enclave. I would recommend that you have your dealer look into this for you. Please keep me posted and if you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
Thank you,

The problem is easy and is the common problem of most of the Enclaves.

You need a new steering rack!!
I'll also say end link. Our started going it last fall. At first it was barely audible, but it became more noticeable after about six months. It doesn't really do it so much with bumps, but just uneven surfaces where the car may rock. It's a dull knocking sound, not really metallic. A few months ago I wiggled the end link on the driver's side, and even though I can hardly feel it move, it pretty much sounded like the rattle I was hearing. A recent trip to the dealer confirmed it when they told my wife it needs new end links. So I'll be taking care of that come spring. If you want to check yourself, get under the car and grab the black vertical rod that is next to the wheel and try to wiggle it.
have the problem right now; diagnosed as swaybar end link which has a ball and socket with play in it, not a bushing.

And the winner is... Yes, it was a swaybar endlink. Thanks for the suggestions!
So I changed sway bar end links and the sway bar bushings and the noise is still there. Is there any other place ?
