Synthetic Oil

Hello

I am new to the forum and have new 2010 Enclave on order. I know the pros and cons of synthetic oil but what does the owners manual say if anything.

Thanks

Re: Synthetic Oil

There are no cons when switching to synthetic with low mileage. Tons of cons using dino :blob:

I run synthetic in all my cars after break in. The oil last longer between changes and I think the milage is little better.

Re: Synthetic Oil

Synthetic oil does not thicken when it gets cold as severely as conventional oil. Therefore, your engine bearings, lifters, timing chains, and cylinder walls get lubricated much quicker after cold startup with synthetic oil. This fact alone justifies the extra cost of synthetic oil--even if you choose to change it as often as conventional oil.

Because of the better viscosity index (does not thicken as much when cold), your chances of the engine starting in below zero weather are improved, also.

If you don't believe the above, take a small transparent container of conventional oil and a second small container of synthetic oil of the same rated viscosity and put it in your freezer overnight. Then, see for yourself how much better the synthetic oil flows when cold.

As someone said above, there are no cons with synthetic oil--unless you consider the extra cost to be a con. As many of you already know, jet airplane engines would not run with conventional oil.

Two completely different engines to try a comparison, but yes I agree there is no possible way a jet engine could run effectively on dino oil

For those of you that are COSTCO members, they have Mobil 1 Fully Syn. on sale for $9 off per 6 pack...limit 3. I picked up my three cases yesterday...$4.16 per quart...FANTASTIC deal :blob:

Re: Synthetic Oil

Whether you use dino, faux "full" synthetic, or real synthetic be sure to read the posts about this topic as copperbeach noted. I certainly do not want to be crying wolf but there is enough good and hard evidence that the 3.6L DI in a Lambda trashes an oil, including Mobil 1, due to fuel dilution long before the OLM gets to 40% to 50%. I am almost wondering if a SM rated xW30 HD diesel oil would not be best for these engines since they are formulated to handle fuel dilution. However, until some more Used Oil Analysis come in that thought will remain just a thought.

I am awaiting some UOAs to show up for the 3.6L DIs in the Camaros to see it the engine in that light body beats up oil as badly as the 3.6L DIs in the Lambdas do.

Agreed. And unless I see some better UOAs for this engine using ILSAC GF-4 SM oils, before next November, I will use a 0W30 SM HDEO for the winter OCI.

Re: Synthetic Oil

All the more reason to use a great quality fully synthetic oil and change it every 5K miles as I have stated over and over again :blob: The OLM is worthless in these vehicles :banghead:

But with due respect we don't really know a "great quality sythetic" (for this engine). For example from UOAs we have seen thus far, it isnt M1.

And for many of us, even forgetting about the OLM, 5k miles may even be too long (if we can't find that "great quality synthetic") e.g. cold winter driving with lots of idling and short tripping.

But as I had mentioned I am hopeful that we will see several UOAs over the next several months.

I picked up 3 cases of Mobil 1 today at Costco. Great Price. I have 1800 miles on the Enclave and I am going to switch to Mobil 1 today.

Re: Synthetic Oil

I have read a lot about UOA's on the AF and it seems that some engines beat the oil up and some don't. There doesn't seem to be any consistency; so that leaves owners wondering...........is my OLM acurate......do I need to switch to a synthetic......

Re: Synthetic Oil

AA - my personal opinion, but one than many folks share, is that it's always a great idea to switch to fully syn. oil. I change out every vehicle I buy to syn. at 1000 miles. The sooner you do it the better! Is the OLM accurate? Some here will swear by it but, again, IMPO and that of many others, it's worthless and should not be trusted especially with the DI engines. You have to decide what's best since it's your vehicle but the choice should be fairly easy. As I tell folks...if you leased your Clave and plan on turning it in at the end of the lease, follow the OLM. If you bought it, love it and deeply care for its well being...switch to fully syn. and change it every 5-6K miles regardless of what the OLM says

That's what I have been doing, too. :thumb:

Re: Synthetic Oil

I just change the oil twice a year spring and fall. Works out to about 6K miles for both vehicels. Never have to worry when the last time it was done. It may be too often but just being able to do a good check up on my car is worth it. I totally agree with cable guy. If you are planning on keeping this vehicle for the long term, I want it running it's best for the longest. That slightly better lubrication over a long period of time is going to have a syn oil engine perform much better at over 100K miles.

Re: Synthetic Oil

It feels kinda like were in uncharted water here with this relatively "new" engine, the GM 3.6 litre DI. Taking Lonestar's lead, I have gone to Pennzoil Ultra with the Mobil1-113 filter. My plan is to have a UOA analysis conducted at 5,000 miles.

Re: Synthetic Oil

izzycohen , let us know the results of you UOA. BTW, my Buick dealer's service rep insisted recently that there is no such thing as the Mobil1-113 oil filter. ::) When I told them that I know of some car owners using just such a filter in their Enclave's, he got one of his service techs to confirm his claim. Makes me wonder if they are liars or uninformed, or both. :eyebrow:
