Pebble strikes windshield

I was running late to work this morning because there was an unusually heavy amount of traffic. As I got close to work, the traffic let up and I got rolling. Suddenly, there was a very loud smack on the windshield that startled me. It was so loud that I heard it over the CD that I was listening to at high volume! I looked around quickly, but did not notice any damage...until I parked the car. There was a very small abrasion near the bottom of the driver's side of the windshield, but it is not chipped or cracked. I can't imagine that it will lead to a problem in the future.

While I am not happy to have a small windshield blemish, I am amazed that the windshield withstood such a hard hit so well. :thumb:

Every time I've had a windshield hit by a 'small" rock there's an abrupt sharp noise. Usually there's a small chip... somewhere. You may be able to have the chip fixed to avoid the development of a crack.

When I looked this morning, there was only a small scratch on the windshield, but no chip or crack. There is nothing to fill or repair. I am anxious to get another look at it tonight when I leave work, but it will be hard to inspect it in the dark.

I used to be very sensitive to defects on the glass. My car was brand new and we're coming back from my parents' in CT using 684 South and something hits the glass and chips it. That lizard co. talked me into repair not replace, so Safelite comes and injects something and the guy drops the compressor on my hood. I lived with this white pimple for 2 years until it chipped right in the driver's view. Went through all this hassle and finally got OEM glass, only to see scratches all over. So when it happened with the Enclave, I am totally used to it. We have this white scratch right in the middle so it's not that distracting, but it happened within 3 mos. of ownership. Chips and cracks I would like to replace, but scratches seem to happen now and then and appear to be unavoidable.... :)

I looked at the windshield last night and the damage looked the same. It appears to be just an abrasion. What amazes me was how loud the noise was when the windshield was struck. I've had numerous pebble strikes in other windshields, but this was much louder.

A few days ago, my Enclave's windshield was struck twice by a pebble. The first time was on the way to work. Just as I was contemplating passing a truck to reduce the chances of having it kick up a pebble, I noticed a pebble flying toward the bottom of the driver's side of the windshield. There was the typical "CRACK", but it was clear immediately that there was no significant damage to the glass. A quick inspection when I got to work revealed a tiny round scuff mark where the pebble had hit, but there was no crack. Phew! Escaped harm again.

On the way home that night on a different road, without any warning, there was a very loud "THWACH" somewhere on the car's windshield. WTF! I couldn't believe my luck! Twice in one day! It was dark outside, so I had trouble evaluating the situation while still driving, but amazingly there was no obvious sign of damage. When I had a chance to inspect the car the next morning, it became clear that I had dodged another bullet pebble essentially unscathed. Double phew!!

From my experience with windshield damage caused by pebbles on other cars, I would say that the Enclave's sound deadening extra thick laminated windshield is more resistant to chipping and cracking that standard windshields. :thumb:

We have two or three small spots, one with a small crack, from rock hits. They haven't gotten any larger and they've been there through at least one winter. They are all low on the windshield. I have no-cost replacement glass coverage but am reluctant to replace it until it really needs replacement. Most times you do not get OEM glass and I'm pretty sure the replacments are not as good as OEM, especially considering the Enclave glass is special. My bet is that I would end up with glass for the Traverse.

I'm going to jinx myself, but I have not had to replace a windshield since my 1986 Chevy Spectrum, back in college. Probably around 1994ish. We have been extremely lucky. But if I ever get one on the Enclave, I'll remember this thread and let you know....also, thanks for the reminder BadAV, would have to ask for the special Enclave glass.

I think one reason the windshields on the E don't chip as bad is due to the windshield being at such a streamlined angle. Stones come back on it at an extreme angle there's not a direct hit

I think the steeply raked windshield angle does reduce the odds of real damage from a stone or pebble strike, but I also believe that the extra thick lamination helps, too.

That is a good point, Falcon. I had ass-u-me-d that he was referring to his Traverse. Which is it, rbarrios?
